A feud, a fire, an affair. Cows in the pasture, men at the lunch counter, violets in an old cream bottle. This is Vermont life passionate, pastoral, pungent in F.D. Reeve s stunning new novella, Nathaniel Purple. The story is more than the sum of its parts. It is author F.D. Reeve s love poem to the state of Vermont, which forms a rich, vivid canvas for his intimate portrayal of village life. But human nature is a bit out of joint. Years of living on the bony land has led the village people to jealousies and forbidden couplings. Reeve draws us into his world through the sharp eyes of Nathaniel Purple, who, as the town's librarian, is the link to the world of books and rational thinking. He is also an everyman, a native Vermonter, able to embrace the town s practical justice. And he has a few secrets of his own. Nathaniel Purple celebrates the strength and timelessness of the natural world above the daily struggle and quotidian quarrels of everyday existence. People live out their destinies while the seasons turn.

In his compelling novella, Nathaniel Purple, F.D. Reeve renders a small Vermont town where everyone knows everyone else and everyone's life is part of a tapestry cross-stitched and woven with everyone else's. As in all human communities, terrible things happen--betrayals, violence, conflagrations--but here each event belongs not just to individuals, but to the whole village. Nathaniel Purple, the town librarian, absorbs it all, responds when he can, looks on, but at the same time continues to savor such simple pleasures as a morning ride with his horse Crystal and picking violets for the woman in his life. The book offers a thought-provoking glimpse into small-town life.
F.D. Reeve's "Nathaniel Purple" creates a compelling and complex portrait of the inner and outward life of a small Vermont town. As he rides his beloved horse about the hills and forests on his early morning rides, Nathaniel, the narrator of the story, town librarian, and historian, draws a vivid portrait of the New England landscape and the town's troubled past Deftly, the narrator plunges us into the center of the community through the struggles of an unhappy family a self-enclosed violent father, enamored only of his dairy cows, and a dissatisfied wife whose two attractive daughters can only attempt to survive. The family troubles are complicated by a feud over forgotten issues with a neighbor family that goes back generations. Early in the novel, the father catches one of his daughters in the barn with the son of the feuding neighbor family. The author cleverly exploits this Juliet and Romeo scenario by involving all the members of the Vermont community, who are terrified at what the dairy farmer might do to the young couple. The suspense takes a surprising turn when the dairy farmer discovers his neighbor in bed with his wife.

This is no simple farm town tale. We discover early that the Vermont community accepts the Nathaniel Purple's passionate love for his first cousin with whom he is living in their common family house passed down for generations. The narrator remains very much a part of the complex community. His love for his horse mirrors the love of the dairy farmer for his cows. When the male members of the community decide that the dairy farmer is too dangerous to remain free, Nathaniel joins the lynch mob. Nevertheless, the cousins' love provides a basso-continuo of gentle romance to the tempestuous plot of feuding angry neighbors. The violent events of the novel finally reach resolution for the two families, a finale attested by the gift of a bouquet of the first wild iris of spring by Nathaniel Purple to his beloved cousin. On closing the book, the reader realizes that he or she has been granted a glimpse into the violence and sweetness of the American ethos.
A fascinating and beautifully crafted work by a master. Reeve has taken a Vermont hill town and invested it with the dignity of a Homeric tale.
